Royal Canadian Engineers

Remembered with honour
AGIRA WAR CEMETERY, SICILY

Born on the 6th of September 1939 in Ottawa, Ontario
Son of Allen Weston Johnston and Olive Catherine Johnston, of Ottawa, Ontario.
Military Medal.

Lloyd served as a dispatch rider in the 3rd Field Company of the RCE. Lloyd was awarded the Military Medal for gallant and distinguished services on Sicily. Here you can read his citation:

"At 0700 hours on 22 July 1943 at Map Reference 340920, (just south on Leonforte) the above mentioned Sapper when under enemy fire transported to safety two wounded comrades. It was necessary for Sapper Johnston to manoeuvre his motorcycle loaded with the wounded through enemy fire, which he did in such a manner that I consider it to be a high act of bravery under enemy fire. As only one of the wounded could be carried on the motorcycle at one time, it involved Sapper Johnston returning under fire and bringing the second casualty back to our lines. This he did with great bravery."

Lloyd is also mentioned in the 3rd Field Company's war diary together with Sergeant William Davies. They were both killed on the same day; 28 July 1943 near Agira. Lloyd was initially buried near the SS121 just outside Agira and later reburied at Agira Canadian War Cemetery.
Lloyd lived with his mother in Ottawa together with his younger brother Allen who was a Lieutenant in the Canadian Army serving in Shilo, Manitoba. His sister lived in Belville and he didn't know where his father was. Lloyd enlisted on the 4th of September 1939 in Ottawa and was also involved in the Spitzbergen raid in 1941 (Operation Gauntlet) with the RCE.
