Remembered with honour
AGIRA WAR CEMETERY, SICILY

Born 28 Gen 1920, Halifax County, Nova Scotia, Canada
Foster-son of John P. Devlin, of Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Enlisted on the 16th of July 1941 in Kingston.

Ralph Devlin was killed in action during the advance towards Leonforte outside Valguarnera. He was on board a carrier with Brigade Major Richard S. Malone who saw a small bridge still in tact. The bridge was pretty quiet and a few shells fell nearby. Malone gave the driver the order to speed towards the bridge and then call in for support. Only 200 yards away from the bridge the carrier hit two German Teller mines causing a big explosion.
Malone was injured and thought his legs were gone. The driver of the carrier was unharmed due to sandbags at the floor of the carrier protecting him against mines. Corporal Ralph Devlin was killed instantly.
Major Malone managed to drag himself to a ditch where he went half-concious. Malone and the driver were rescued by a section of Canadians and his legs were fine. He suffered a severe battering on his spine and cracked several ribs.

Ralph Devlin lived in Vimy Barracks, Kingston, Ontario. His foster father lived in Halifax and his mother had passed away. He had four sisters and five brothers.
In November 2013 in Westmount, Halifax (NS) 10 streets were named after servicemen who died in conflicts. Ralph Devlin got a street named after him, Ralph Devlin Drive.
