Corporal William Stanley Beads, Seaforth Highlanders of Canada. Born on 9 March 1912 in Prince Albert (SK) and died of wounds on 20 July 1943.
Intelligence reports had suggested the Germans were withdrawing to positions closer to Mount Etna (further to the east) and that Leonforte was "lightly held." On 20 July, a Seaforth scout force of two platoons pushed into the town. At dawn, the force was detected and withdrew under heavy fire. During the withdrawal of the scout force, near the Dittaino Train Station, either a mine or mortar shell exploded taking the lives of two men, both non-commissioned officers, Corporal Hugh Mercer and Corporal William Stanley Beads. Hugh left his mother and two brothers behind who lived in Vancouver (BC). Disaster struck for the Beads family as his brother James Lawrence, who also served in the Seaforths, was killed in action on the 23rd of December 1943 near Ortona. His mother already lost two sons in the 30's...
