Private Carl Victor Burke, 48th Highlanders of Canada. Born on 28 February 1913 in Cobalt (ON) and died of wounds on 23 July 1943.According to "Dileas" by Kim Beattie Carl Burke was wounded in action during the attack on Assoro:
"Baker and Dog Companies led the Highlanders' watchful move in the dark across the five-mile stretch of rugged country toward the main Adrano road, without encountering a serious check. They were dubious about German positions; wary patrols felt the way, and because of the artillery threat, the men were wisely spaced at 5-yard intervals. A form-up position had been chosen, 11?2 miles short of the road-crossing, where they halted. Then history repeated itself. They were just ready to go on, when the German medium artillery found them once more. It was more dangerous this time, for they were without slits. Fortunately Dog and Baker were a short distance in the lead, and escaped, and the men of the other companies were well spaced at those 5-yard intervals. That was all that saved them a frightful experience, for even more salvoes roared down this time. As it was, 2 Highlanders were killed and 4 wounded.
This last smash of heavy shells had increased their Assoro casualty list to 8 killed and 29 wounded. Cpl. Harvey Ball and Ptes. Jim Cameron, Doug Holmes, Ray Leadbeater, Murray Whalen and Drummer Bill Thompson were dead, and Ptes. Carl Burke and Irving Leith died of their wounds."
Carl was married to Rita Marie Burke of Sarnia (ON) and on the 18th of October 1943 their daughter Leda Dorothy was born. Carl never got the chance to see and hold his daughter. His parents were divorced and he also had two sisters. His mother took care of his daughter.
