Remembered with honour
AGIRA WAR CEMETERY, SICILY

Born 14 Apr 1918 Woodstock, Carleton County, New Brunswick, Canada
Son of Alice Devoe.

Archie Devoe was killed in action during the advance to La Rosamarina. He was the 2" mortar man of his company.
He was initially buried in a field grave between Centuripe and La Rosamarina on a bank just above a brook.
Archie was of Native American (then still called Indian) descent. His mother had married a Native American man but he died before Archie was born. A couple of years after her husband's death Archie was born and according to the Native Americans in the reserve he was an illigitimate child. Archie's mother felt so ashamed about her act that she sent him with other people to the church to be baptized. Archie had his mother's family name.
When Archie was seven years of age his mother died and he grew up with his aunt in Houlton, Maine.
Archie joined the army in 1940 but he hated his time there and felt very lonely. He had written a letter to his girlfriend Theresa Polchies from Fredericton (NB) explaining that he missed her so much and that he regretted to have ever joined the army.
He had headaches all the time and wished he was back with her again. He had sent her an engagement ring, but it is not known if it ever reached her. Theresa was his only next of kin, unfortunately they never met again....
