Sergeant Peter Birnie, 48th Highlanders of Canada. Born on 5 January 1908 in Aberdeen, Scotland and KIA 25 July 1943.
Peter was one of the old school men of the Highlanders. He joined them in 1930. He was killed in action after the bloody battle in Nissoria where the Glamour Boys lost 53 men, 15 fatal.
(source: Dileas by Kim Beattie) Peter was also one of the Highlanders who disembarked in Brest, France during the Battle for France in June 1940. This was on June 14, 1940 and the next day they were shipped back from St Malo to England again.
Peter married Marjory Pearl Hayden in April 1935 and together they had three sons, Peter (10), John (8) and Howard (2). His wife Pearl passed away in 1987 and his son John in 2004.
His family lived in the Toronto area and one sister in Buffalo. Peter had two brothers and three sisters.
