He was born on June 27,1919, Windsor, Hants County, Nova Scotia (Canada) and he was adopted into the family of Walter and Rhoda Carl of Windsor, NS.
Card had been in Hants County since 1761 when Richard Card arrived from Rhode Island.
His new parents owned and operated ' Card's Grocery' in Windsor, and as soon as he was able, he helped out at the store.
He owe them a lot, since he may not have been the perfect child. He didn't know how lucky he was. Sadly, Walter died in 1936. Card was 17 years old.
After the war started, he enlisted with the West Nova Scotia Regiment, proudly and respectfully known as the 'West Novas', on January 31, 1940 at Aldershot,NS.
Card was 20.
Soon after we invaded Sicily (July,1943), she sustained shrapnel wounds in the abdomen on August 1st.
The medical staff made a valiant effort for five days, but he died of his wounds on August 5, 1943. He was 24.
Private Donald Albert Card, West Nova Scotia Regiment. Born on the 27th of July 1919 in Windsor, Nova Scotia and died of wounds on the 5th of August 1943.Donald most likely served in B or C-Company of the West Novas who came under heavy shellfire on the 1st of August 1943 near La Rosamarina. He was holding a position in line and was hit by high explosive shrapnel in the abdomen area. He was rushed into a field dressing station and later transferred to a field hospital near Ramacca. Here he succumbed of his wounds on the 5th of August 1943. He was initially buried in Ramacca and later reburied at Agira.
Donald was officially born as Albert Donaldson McLeod and adopted by his parents Walter and Rhoda Card. His father had Card's Grocery's in Windsor, Nova Scotia and passed away in 1936. Donald also had one brother and two sisters. One of his sister passed away in 1942. Donald enlisted on the 31st of January 1940 in Aldershot, Nova Scotia.
