Signalman Herman William Jinssen, Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. Born on the 14th of June 1910 in The Netherlands and killed in action on the 12th of July 1943.
Herman served in the 1st Division Signals as an orderly. On the 12th of July 1943 they were driving in a convoy on the Pachino to Ispica road when they came under attack by German Luftwaffe fighters. The fighters attacked the convoy killing five men and wounding seven. The five killed men were Sergeant Ted Kroon (also from The Netherlands) and Signalmen Robert Quinn, Milton Stewart Quick and Charles Brown. This made that the RCCS had the highest casualty rate in the opening days of Operation Husky. The lads were initially buried near where they were killed and later reburied at Agira.
Herman came to Canada with his parents, Leonard and Hermina, at the age of one. They lived in Preston, Ontario and in the 1930's Herman joined the Royal Canadian Navy serving as a stoker 2nd class on the HMCS Stadacona and Champlain. On his attestation paper and Ontario death certificate it says that Herman was born in Preston, but this is not correct. He was born in The Netherlands and most likely in the area around The Hague where Jinssen is a common name.
Herman enlisted in the Canadian Army on the 16th of January 1940 in Toronto and was added to the RCCS in 1942. Herman was married to Lillian McIntosh who originally came from Cape Breton. They lived in Toronto and they had three children; Margaret (9), Herman jr (7) and Shirley (5).
