British Empire Medal

Ralph S. Eckhardt, B.E.M. before going overseas about 1941.
Ralph was born December 5, 1920 in St Catharines, Ontario, the son of Norman and Florence Eckhardt.
His brothers,Bruce and Charles also served overseas.

Ralph was one of the casualties of the booby trapped gun emplacement on November 17. He and a some of his comrades were in a captured Italian gun emplacement when an explosion took place. It seemed that the gun emplacement was booby trapped killing seven Dragoons and wounding 15 others. Ralph suffered multiple deep burns all over his body and head. He succumbed of his wounds the next day in No. 33 General Hospital in Siracusa.
The other fatalities were Lieutenant Craven, Lieutenant Jarvis, Trooper Hischuck, Trooper Bain, Trooper Simpson, Trooper Poulton. They had disembarked on the 8th of November 1943 in Augusta, Sicily.
An investigation was made to the cause of the explosion and it couldn't be clarified that it was a booby trap or another cause. All men were initially buried at Syracuse War Cemetery and later reburied at Agira.
Ralph was posthumously awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for bravery on 27 May 1944. It is not known for what bravery he received the BEM posthumously.
Ralph lived in Port Dalhousie, Ontario with his parents. He had three younger brothers (2 serving with the Canadian Army) and three sisters. He enlisted on the 11th of April 1941 in St Catharines.
