Son of Arthur James Hartwell and Rena Hartwell;
Husband of Helen Christine Hartwell, of St. Vital, Manitoba.



In memory of the men and women memorialized on the pages of the Winnipeg Evening Tribune.

Arthur served in the No 9 Field Ambulance from the RCAMC which had is medical post in a school in Agira on the 31st of July 1943. On this day the No 4 Field Ambulance, situated in Valguarnera, was attacked by German airplanes which caused casualties.
Arthur was at that time in Valguarnera and suffered severe wounds by the aerial bombs which caused his death on the 8th of August. He was then in a hospital in Scordia where he was initially buried. (source: Official History of the Canadian Medical Services 1939-1945) Arthur was married to Helen Christine and together they had one son, Gary, who was 17 months at the time of Arthur's death. They lived in St Vital, Manitoba where his parents, one brother and one sister also lived. Another brother served overseas with the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. Arthur's father also served as a Lance Corporal in the RCAMC in Canada and was a World War I veteran.
Arthur enlisted on the 31st of July 1942 in Winnipeg after serving from July 1940 until July 1941 in the RCAMC reserves.
