Private Charles "Chas" Percival Bedborough, Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment. Born on 13 December 1913 in Picton, Ontario and killed in action on 25 July 1943.
Charles was killed during the attack on the hills east of Nissoria on 25 July 1943. Below is a part of their war diary from that day:
"By this time the fire had become so intense that the C.O. decided to send Major A.A. Kennedy back to Brigade to ask for immediate Artillery support. In the meantime "B" Coy had outflanked the post which it was attacking and had overrun it, killing a number of Germans and capturing others. At this point the enemy mortars became extremely active while the very numerous MMG posts obtained considerable support from three Mk III tanks which had been dug in on commanding points. It became impossible to advance without suffering the loss of most of the Battalion, and the C.O., who had been quite badly wounded in the leg by a mortar shell, ordered a withdrawal before his own evacuation. The withdrawal was carried out with "D" Coy remaining behind as rear guard and covering the movements of our tps. A Sec of "B" Coy, under Corporal Bullied, F.R., were unable to withdraw and remained within 40 yds of the enemy, unobserved, throughout the next day, returning the next night.
The Battalion retired past Nissoria and took up a position in a narrow valley near the main road, here they reorganized and prepared for a counter attack. The withdrawal had been carried out in daylight and shortly after our arrival in the rear posn, fire was opened on us by 9 in and medium mortars. Throughout the day the Battalion rested, although they were under continuous mortar fire until night.
Our casaulties in this engagement were fairly heavy, a number of men being killed and many wounded. Besides the C.O. three officers were evacuated with wounds." Charles was buried with several others east of Nissoria and later reburied at Agira Canadian War Cemetery. Charles married Gertrude Rollands of Glasgow, Scotland in November 1942. According to Charles' files they had a child too, but it is unknown if Charles ever knew this.
He lived in South Bay, Ontario and had two brothers and one sister. Charles enlisted officially on 24 October 1939 in Picton, but served from 1932 until 1939 in the active militia with the Hasty P's. He was also part of the Allied Expeditionary Force which was sent to France in June 1940.
On the photo Charles is the guy in the middle. Left of him is Private Arnold Foster Barker who was killed in action with the Hasty P's on 21 December 1944 and is buried at Argenta Gap War Cemetery. On the right is Cec Rodriguez.
