Gunner John Hughes, Royal Canadian Artillery. Born on the 20th of June 1902 in St Helen's, Lancashire, England and died of wounds on the 9th of September 1943.
John served in the 2nd Light Anti Aircraft Regiment of the RCA and was accidentally shot by someone cleaning his rifle on the 23rd of July 1943. He was rushed to an Advanced Dressing Station by No. 4 Field Ambulance. Due to the severeness of his wounds, he was transported to No. 54 General Hospital which was situated in Floridia. John had a gun shot wound in the buttocks, rectum and bladder and a fractured pelvis. He eventually succumbed to his wounds on the 9th of September 1943. He was buried in the military section of the Floridia Cemetery.
John had lived for 15 years in Canada before enlisting with the RCA on the 21st of August 1942. He lived in Toronto where he rented a room. His parents had deceased and he had only one sister, Mrs Martha Bagshaw of Brooklands Sale, Cheshire, England.
