Killed near Frosinone just after the 1st Canadian Division had broken the Hitler line in the Liri Valley.
Tys was the son of Roel and Anna Feenstra, immigrants from the Netherlands, who had settled on a farm in Clandonald, Alberta, Canada. He dearly wanted to be part of the liberation of the country he was born in. If he had survived to March 1945, he would have been moved out of Italy with the Seaforths reassigned to the liberation of the Netherlands which was completed on May 4, 1945.
His family and relatives who immigrated to Canada after the war still live in the Vermilion area and in other parts of Alberta.
