Norville Nowell, grandson of Reuben Nowell, the pioneer farmer and a former Reeve in the district, was born in Chilliwack in 1920. \"Norman\" and his brother Reuben joined the Canadian Forestry Corps in 1940 and were both posted on active service to Scotland. In 1942, Norman, also known as \"Bud\", transferred to the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada and served in action throughout Sicily and Italy One of his letters home was published in the Chilliwack Progress and commented, \"No mountain climbs for me when I get back home.\" During the actions of \"The Gully\" on December 11, 1943, Norman lost his life. Four siblings of Norman Nowell served in the forces including, Reuben, Harrison, Geraldine and George.
